Rochester Hills Public Library Hosts Talk on President Kennedy Assassination

Fifty-four years ago, one of the most influential events in American history happened: the John F. Kennedy Assassination. On Thursday, May 11, the Rochester Hills Public Library will host the event, Interview with Dallas Detective about the Kennedy Assassination, at 7:00 p.m.

Historian Larry Martin

Historian Larry Martin

Historian Larry Martin will share his video interview with Detective Jim Leavelle that he recorded while he was in Dallas, Texas. Det. Leavelle was handcuffed to Lee Harvey Oswald when Oswald was shot.

“The Kennedy Assassination remains one of the most pinnacle moments in history that changed the course of America,” says Martin. “Detective Leavelle is one of the few who know this event better than anyone, which makes this an interview worth hearing.”

Det. Leavelle was originally investigating Oswald because he had shot and killed a Dallas police officer after the assassination. Leavelle has experienced two of the most important historical events in American history; he was present for Kennedy Assassination and was at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked in 1941.

“Many in the community still ask questions regarding the Kennedy Assassination,” says Community Relations Specialist Amanda Harrison Keighley. “We hope that Martin’s interview and presentation can shed some light onto what happened during that time.”

Registration is available online for this event at calendar.rhpl.org. Sign up in advance as space will be limited.

Rochester Hills Public Library Remembers Detroit Race Riots for 50th Anniversary

In July, Detroit will be reflecting on the 50th anniversary of the four-day race riot that left 43 dead, 4,853 arrested, and 477 buildings burned. The Rochester Hills Public Library will be hosting a program called Press Coverage of the Race Riots on Thursday, May 18 at 7:00 p.m. to highlight the history of this event.

Casandra Ulbrich

Casandra Ulbrich

As the Vice President for College Advancement and Community Relations at Macomb Community College, Casandra Ulbrich penned her doctoral dissertation called Riot or Rebellion: Media Framing and the 1967 Detroit Uprising. Ulbrich will be coming to the library to speak on how perceptions of those living outside of the city were greatly influenced by the media coverage.

“It is important that we never forget what happened,” says Ulbrich, “if we ignore why people rioted in the first place, we will be destined to repeat history. Fifty years later these topics are still relevant.”

Ulbrich plans to explore press coverage during and after the riots and how that shaped the narrative about the whole event.

“Media coverage, as we’ve all seen, can easily divide the public on the same issue. That’s why the Rochester Hills Public Library is committed to the Share Truth campaign and enlightening the public to what good journalism is,” says Community Relations Specialist Amanda Harrison Keighley, “We are excited to have Casandra Ulbrich analyze the influence of news coverage during this time period.”

Registration is available online for this event at calendar.rhpl.org. Sign up in advance as space will be limited.

“The biking tour is something I look forward to all year because it showcases the amazing trail system our community offers, while talking about its unique history and … it sneaks in a little exercise. I want to invite everyone: families, teens and seniors to join us. If you love to bike and love history this is an event not to be missed,” says Community Relations Specialist Amanda Harrison Keighley.

“With almost 200 years of history it was difficult to choose which sites to talk about during our tour, but there are two sites I knew we had to include – the Canal and ski jump location and the Former Grand Trunk Western Railroad Depot Site,” says Pat McKay, Manager of the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm.

The program is open to library card holders; all ages are welcome, registration is required. To register please visit calendar.rhpl.org. Please meet in the library’s west entrance.

“The Rochester Hills Public Library strives to be an educational town square by offering materials and activities that enrich the lives of our community members while keeping them engaged and entertained,” says Adult Services Manager Jessica Parij. “The next kit we hope to release will be on star gazing, the kit will be a nice complement to our Solar Eclipse Watch Party on August 21.”

Participants of the watch party will be given special glasses that allow them to safely witness the 80 percent partial solar eclipse happening at 1 :00 p.m. on Monday, August 21.

Prior to the watch party, the library will host Our Amazing Sun, an educational seminar on solar eclipses, Thursday, August 17 at 7:00 p.m. During the seminar, Oakland University Professor Dr. Kapila Clara Castoldi will cover why eclipses happen, the ‘hidden’ aspects of our Sun and solar observations in space.

Books on Faith and Books for Kids Big at Summer Book Sale

The Friends of the Rochester Hills Public Library’s Summer Used Book and Media Sale, set for July 26 – 31, will be offering up an especially large collection of books in two areas.

Sale chairperson Ann Gruenewald reports, “an unusually large number of religion-oriented books will be offered because of an extraordinary donation from a retired theology professor.” Most will go for $1 for hardcover and large softcover and 50 cents for small paperbacks. Gruenewald also noted “We also have an exceptionally large number of children’s books, especially non-fiction ones.” All children’s books are 50 cents except for a small number of like-new books that are priced slightly higher. The sale is at the library building at 500 Olde Towne Road in downtown Rochester. It will be located in the library’s second floor addition in the space dedicated to the Friends’ used book operation.

Other reasons to stop by? There is much to read and buy beyond the aforementioned religion and kid’s books. There are 40,000 hardcover and paperback books in many other categories, plus lots of fiction. There’s a large selection of DVDs for $2, CDs & VHS cassettes for 50 cents and some board games and puzzles. The sale hours are familiar to regulars with one exception. Because the library is closed on Sundays in the summer, the Bag Day (all the items you can place in a large paper grocery bag for $5) will be Monday morning. Come early for the best selection. Here is other pertinent sale information:

As usual, Friends members get to take part in a pre-sale, set for Wednesday, July 26, from 5:30 – 8 p.m. (New members can join upon entry. Registration at individual $20; family $35; Student/Senior $10 and senior couple $20 are available at the door.)

The general sale open to the public then takes place as follows (note that sale hours are slightly different from the library’s hours of operation):

  • Thursday, July 27: 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Friday, July 28: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, July 29: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Monday, July 31: 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Bag Day (explained above).

Library patrons donate books and other sales material throughout the year. For more info on how to donate media and on the value of a Friends membership, go to www.rhpl.org and click on the Friends link at the bottom of the home page.

Proceeds from the event go to the Friends, the Library’s primary volunteer support group. The Friends in turn fund many library needs and improvements beyond its public budget from Rochester, Rochester Hills and Oakland Twp.

Rochester Hills Public Library

For the first time The Rochester Hills Public Library will offer a Braille Enhanced Story Walk starting on July 17 at 10:30 a.m. As a participant, you’ll discover a page from a children’s picture book, laminated and mounted. As you continue walking through the library’s gardens you’ll discover another page, and then another, until you realize you’re reading a story.

Story Walk combines the pleasures of reading wonderful children’s books aloud with the joys and benefits of walking together outdoors.

Rochester Hills Public Library

Rochester Hills Public Library

“We are offering Story Walk as a way to promote early childhood literacy. When children are being read out loud to during the Story Walk by an adult, it gives children the opportunity to learn new words, describe things they see, enjoy stories, learn how to follow a story in sequence and play with the sounds in the words,” says Outreach Manager Mary Davis.

“Libraries are ideal locations for families to lay the foundation for reading. We want to support those families as they develop habits of talking and reading to their children from birth to build their knowledge by offering tools and resources like the Story Walk,” says Library Director Christine Lind Hage.

The Rochester Hills Public Library’s Enhanced Braille Story Walk will be available in both plain text and braille. The program was made possible by funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services via the Library of Michigan.

Participants are encouraged to share their experience with the library by using the hashtag #MiSummerReads

Rochester Hills Public Library Store Seeks Volunteers

The Friends of the Rochester Hills Library is looking for volunteers to work in the Friends Store at the library. The store is run entirely by volunteers who are responsible for the selection and display of merchandise, as well as for staffing the store.

Join the Volunteers of the Friends of the Rochester Hills Public Library

Volunteers work a regularly scheduled two- or three-hour shift each week. Training is provided, and new volunteers are placed with seasoned veterans for their shift. “Some people are intimidated by using the cash register,” commented Sue Falvo, one of the store assistant managers. “I know I was, at first. But it’s a basic machine and it’s easy to get the hang of it.”

Retail experience is not necessary. The most important qualification is a pleasant personality and enjoyment of working with the public. “Our volunteers tend to stay on, partly because of the friendships they form, I think,” said Darlene Tomczyk, store manager. “In fact,” she went on to say, “we just celebrated the store’s 25 year anniversary, and we honored three individuals who have been with the store for all those years.”

Anyone interested is asked to drop by the Friends Store to fill out an application.

Rochester Hills Public Library Plants New Little Free Library

In an effort to promote literacy in the community, the Rochester Hills Public Library has planted its third Little Free Library on the Paint Creek Trail in Oakland Township off Orion Road.

Located behind the Flagstar Bank, this new Little Free Library acts as a self-service exchange for people to donate and collect books. This worldwide movement, started by the Little Free Library organization, helps to get children and adults reading, with their motto “Take a Book, Return a Book.”

“Not only do the Little Free Libraries promote literacy and provide access to reading materials, but they are also a great way to interact with your community and give back in a small way,” says Outreach Services and Bookmobile Librarian Rebecca LaFave, “Plus it’s a really fun way to get rid of your old books.”

The Rochester Hills Public Library supports two additional Little Free Libraries, one in Spencer Park in Rochester Hills and one in Bloomer Park in Rochester. This new location in Oakland Township covers the third community in RHPL’s service area.

“Although we are the Rochester Hills Public Library, we are located in Rochester and bridge Oakland Township,” says Library Director Christine Lind Hage, “This new Little Free Library helps us to continue to serve each of these cities to the best of our ability.”

Little Free Libraries are open to the public; participants do not need to have a library card to pick up or drop off a book. Other organizations and communities have also placed Little Free Libraries around our community as well.

On September 12 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m., the Rochester Hills Public Library will host Michigan Opera Theatre’s OperaHERE outreach program with musicologist Austin Stewart.

Substituting for Dr. DiChiera’s lecture, the Michigan Opera Theatre will celebrate opera through its enrichment experience, OperaHERE. This program introduces new and experienced audiences to two great pieces of opera, Verdi’s Rigoletto and Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro.

“The OperaHERE program is designed to make you think about opera in new and revealing ways,” says Stewart. “Each session is illustrated by live musical performances and visual examples and includes opportunities for question-and-answer and discussion.”

As the audience engagement coordinator for the Michigan Opera Theatre, Austin Stewart resides as the MOT musicologist, covering topics ranging from cultural and historical context woven into operas to current events through an operatic lens.

“We are thrilled to have Austin Stewart present OperaHERE at the Rochester Hills Public Library,” says Community Relations Specialist Amanda Harrison Keighley. “Exploring MOT and opera classics with some of Michigan’s most respected names in the business will make for an evening not to be missed.”

At the program, the Rochester Hills Public Library will be dedicating its new baby grand piano in memory of former Library Trustee, Nadine Harvey.

Friends of the Rochester Hills’s Public Library 2017 Holiday Home Tour

Get ready for a couple of big changes to one of the area’s most popular holiday events, the Friends of the Rochester Hills’s Public Library 2017 Holiday Home Tour.

This year, the showcase of five area homes done up in high style for the holidays for all to see, will move from the traditional Sunday date to Saturday, November 11, from 12 noon – 5:00 p.m. The shift avoids a conflict with an increasing number of other holiday-oriented events scheduled for Sundays in November. It also hopes to take advantage of people being out-and-about on Saturdays and adding it to their agendas, rather than making a special trip on a Sunday.

Another big change: The tour’s popular Gift Boutique – ideal for filling out holiday shopping lists – will be hosted at a very familiar sixth stop, the Rochester Hills Public Library’s multi-purpose room (at 500 Olde Towne Road in downtown Rochester) from 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. on the same day. The boutique will be open to anyone visiting the library. Cider and donut refreshments will be available for each person with a HHT ticket.

Be sure to save the date for your personal calendar. Home information and ticket sale details will be released in late September. Check the www.rhpl.org website for the latest information.

“Southeast Michigan is fortunate to have several cider mills in our community, each one offering the visitor a difference experience,” says Dwyer, “these independently owned, local businesses celebrate the best the fall harvest provides.”

Michigan’s river system and climate make it ideal for cider mills and the beautiful landscape has only helped their popularity.

The presentation will highlight the Rochester Area cider mills, including Yates, Goodison, Paint Creek, Rochester, and Middleton.

“The fresh-pressed cider and warm donuts keep people coming back to our cider mills every September and October, keeping the apple industry a thriving part of Michigan’s economy,” says Community Relations Specialist Amanda Harrison Keighley.

The evening will include a pro-forma meeting which will include an introduction of Friends officers and board members, brief financial and operational reports and two presentations: The Volunteer of the Year award and the presentation of a $190,000 check from the group to Library Director Christine Hage.

The Friends group raised the money via its used book and media sales, proceeds from the Library Store and membership dues from its 800+ members, as well as from other fundraisers during the year like: Wine, Wit & Wisdom and the Holiday Home Tour. New members can join at the meeting.

After the annual meeting, the evening’s featured guest speaker will be Anneke Burke-Kooistra. A resident of Mayville, Mi., she lived in Utrecht in the Netherlands from 1942-45 and will tell the story of how her family protected eight Jewish refugees from the occupying Nazi forces. Incredibly, she and two sisters never knew of their presence until the war ended because the children were too young to be trusted with a secret that could expose all involved to Nazi wrath.

Local Author Shares Findings About Oscar Wilde’s Legacy

Investigate one of the literary world’s most recognized writers during the Rochester Hills Public Library’s program, The Battle Over Oscar Wilde’s Legacy on October 24 at 7:00 p.m.

One of literature’s most controversial figures during the turn of the 19th century, Oscar Wilde remains as an Irish author of plays, epigrams, and the novel The Picture of Dorian Grey. His life sparked controversy as a series of lawsuits revealed his secret affairs with his close friends.

The Battle Over Oscar Wilde’s Legacy on October 24 at 7 p.m.

“Years after Oscar Wilde’s death, two of his closest friends, Lord Alfred Douglas and his literary executor Robert Ross ‒ both former lovers ‒ engaged in a bitter battle over Wilde’s legacy and who was to blame for his downfall and early death,” says author and Oscar Wilde scholar Laura Lee.

Rochester Hills native, Laura Lee has dedicated her studies to investigating the history, writings, and the scandal of Oscar Wilde. Her new book Oscar’s Ghost: The Battle Over Oscar Wilde’s Legacy documents the struggle over Oscar’s public image through obtaining published letters of the Douglas estate.

“Oscar Wilde remains as a strong figure in literary work,” said Community Relations Specialist Amanda Harrison Keighley, “as such, we appreciate authors like Laura Lee who help us to better understand their lives.”
